Regular readers will know how much I love to go hiking in unusual places and today I will tell you about one of my favourites. Cappadocia is located in the centre of Turkey, southeast of the capital Ankara, and is like nowhere you have ever seen before. The expansive terrain is made up of crazy rock formations including those commonly known as fairy chimneys. These phallic towers consist of relatively soft rock topped by harder rock which protects the columns from the elements. Aside from the chimneys, there are plenty more interesting formations in the numerous valleys to whet your appetite. From the warm hues of Red Valley to the romantic curves of Love Valley, the region is a joy to behold.

Most people we encountered were involved in organized tour but I highly recommend you just do your own thing. Many of the structures have been hollowed out so you never know what you will find inside. Some are small caves and are not that exciting, some are churches with staircases, carvings and murals! Going on an organized tour will undoubtedly take you to the best of these but, in my opinion, the best way to see it by exploring blindly. It is the best way to get a real sense of adventure. If we had gone on a tour, would we have met local man Hassan? Would we have climbed a hill in the middle of the night? I think not!

Before leaving the UK for Turkey I had a crazy panic after leaving my passport at my parents'house but thanks to the wonder of sameday couriers, I was able to retrieve it in time to catch my flight. Thank heavens for that as I would not have missed this trip for the world, but this was certainly close.

Much has been said about going green. Matter of fact, this term has been bandied about so much that it has now become a part of everyday vocabulary. So much so that you half expect everything to have conformed to keeping the earth a safe and better place to live in. A noble cause and well worth the hullabaloo. Not like a musical event that goes around the world but skips Kingston for no reason. I was in for the shock of my life the other day when I came across an article that proclaimed that hybrid cars actually discharged more harmful substances than petrol or diesel ones. Boy, you could have knocked me over with a feather!

One unconsciously assumes that green means green. Not a variation that can be passed off as the actual one. It seldom crosses a layman’s mind to doubt the authenticity of what is proclaimed by government agencies and big companies. Imagine if this is a fact that has been hidden from mankind for some pecuniary motive. We could well do further damage mistakenly being led to believe that we are saving the earth! Question then is, how green is green?

There is no point in fooling others as those who think they are, essentially hoodwink their own loved ones too. Damage to the environment affects everybody. And it’s not an easy task undoing the damage to the environment. The best way forward is for all the nations to adapt a uniform code that does the least, if not negligible, damage to the environment after evaluating the existing ones to see if it actually serves the purpose. Until such time the humble bicycle as a means of transport continues to be a good alternative; both for the environment and our own health. There are no shades of green here.

A new and innovative initiative has started in the UK thanks to which we can make the most of recycling. No doubt that people concerned about the environment have been proclaiming the fact that without making the most of resources we would be simply increasing our impact over the plant’s environment. This is the reason why people from all classes and institutions have now the great opportunity to make their contribution to the world and reduce their impact over the environment.

The initiative is actually a simple machine that you can dispose of your waste. It collects used paper and aluminium and keeps them for the next step of recycling. The so called recycling machines have been installed in many public buildings, including universities (Brunel University of London is one of the first to introduce this concept to its students by equipping libraries and lecture centers with such machines) and hospitals. Furthermore, the machine allows you to get receipts and track how much of recycling you have done. This is definitely a good way of motivating the people to actually recycle simply because it allows you to observe what you actually have done for the well being of the environment.

The machine is offered by either private parties engaged in the business of recycling or by financing from the public sector. Both ways they work efficiently and provide good results for the maintenance of a healthier environment. And while people would remain busy with their daily concerns and small pleasures such as silver jewellery, designer clothes and so on, they actually have a chance to do something more than simply throwing away useless stuff. This is a great opportunity for the young people to be introduced to a more socially responsible behaviour and also a good option to make your stay in the Uk (if a visitor) a bit more contributory to the environment.

Definitely, the people practicing the teaching English jobs are trying to teach our children that environmental protection is what we all need to follow as a concept principle if we want to move towards a greener way of life. However, do we really do that? This can be easily observed when we head for a vacation. People hardly realize that even the way they pack is important to the environment and this is what needs to be discussed - we cannot avoid using planes no matter how they pollute, but we little and even insignificant effort we can actually make an absolute green contribution to the environment.

We usually pack out stuff in the suitcase using those plastic bags that we get from any supermarket. We use them to separate underwear from official clothing for example and by the end of our trip we throw them away, very often in the bin for containing non-recyclable waste. But is this environmentally friendly travelling? Not really! The plastic waste takes thousands of years to be absorbed by the environment and this absorption is actually quite harmful to the nature as a whole. So why do we keep packaging stuff in plastic?

Another way is available. Paper bags might seem not quite convenient for packaging clothes for example. But they do the job quite fine - you still have a device to divide your luggage in your suitcase. More importantly, paper is environmentally friendly. First of all, when thrown away it is recyclable and might be used multiple times which reduces the impact on the environment. Secondly, paper takes only up to a month to be absorbed by the environment is thrown away without recycling and still causes absolutely no harm because it is obtained through processing natural materials - wood. So do not we try to stay environmentally friendly while travelling by simply using a paper bag rather than the plastic container that is among the major polluters in the environment.

Travelling the world is the stuff of dreams for most of it. What better way to expand your horizons than to head off on an amazing trek that will take you across the continents of the world and allow you to experience difficult cultures and ways of living? It’s no wonder that so many people take a year or more out of their lives for a valuable trip. It’s not running away from life, after all: it’s embracing it. After all, who wants to look back and regret not having done such an essential thing?
However, travelling the world isn’t cheap, particularly when you’re travelling to countries in Europe or in developed countries throughout the world. Fortunately there are plenty of opportunities for travellers who speak English as their native language. English is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world, and because it’s used widely as a business language or in politics, people everywhere want to improve their English skills.
For this reason English teacher jobs are available the world around, and as a native speaker you’ll be in hot demand. Schools, universities, and other institutions are often looking for helpers for conversation classes, or on a more formal teaching basis. Many individuals are also looking for tutors to help them with specialised skills such as business English or the English needed for a particular field, such as engineering or architecture.
Because it’s in high demand, English teaching can pay quite well, and the hours are less demanding than, say, working at a pub. Give it a try!

One of the world’s most untouched places, the Amazon river is a wonderland of lush rainforests and fantastic natural variety. But there’s more to the Amazon than first meets the eye, and, for many years, this wilderness has been home to locals who fish the rivers and the lakes in order to survive.

With arms conditioned by years of fishing and living on the barest of meals – surprisingly filling but lacking that variety which westerners are so used to – a man called Tapioca sinks into his long, one-man boat and pushes off in search of fish. Heading down river across the brown surface of the Amazon, he’s making his way closer to the rainforest, where he hopes to find the Pieroco…the cod of the Amazon, and a monster fish which can grow up to 15ft in length and overpower a small boat.

In the rain-forest there is an ethereal feel which is hard to describe, and the hunter’s Crafts Fabric blends seamlessly with the soft, pastel colours. The forest is flooded at this time of year, meaning that the monkeys which would usually be high up are actually lower down, closer to the waters surface—

…before a pink creature is pulled from the water – large at around 7 feet but still much smaller than the monsters that can evolve

Tapioca spots something…no, wait, he feels something. It’s moving beneath the boat, and he can feel it. Like his father and his father before him, years of being outside in nature have allowed skills to develop which an outsider couldn’t possibly hope to develop.

To begin with he just stares at the water. Then, pulling the spear back, his face becomes steely. Another second, another sign and the spear dives through the water, striking something large. Then the fight ensues. It goes on for some minutes before a pink creature is pulled from the water – large at around 7 feet but still much smaller than the monsters that can evolve in the Amazon.

The fish is taken back to the huts and divided up. Pieces are given to everyone in the village, for these are a kind natured people who care about one another. It is a culture of giving and receiving and fairness and love.

Which is why you simply must visit the Amazon. Make it there and you will be rewarded handsomely.

Of course, it wasn’t always like this. At one time the water was teeming with life, but now only the most experienced catch fish. But, thanks to a new initiative of sustainable fishing, it seems that fish numbers are increasing. Soon there is hope that this community will have a wealth of food available.

Eco Trekkers know how important it is to fit in with the society and culture we are visiting. Also, we love giving something back to the people who are hosting our travels. One of the best ways of contributing to the societies we visit is by teaching English as a foreign language in the countries we want to stay in.

English teaching jobs are always available in huge numbers throughout the world. Third World countries such as Laos and Thailand in Southeast Asia, Senegal and Zambia in Africa, and Venezuela and Columbia in South America all have a big demand for first-class English-language teachers. And, surprisingly, it is not just the Third World countries that need native English-speakers: European countries as wide-ranging as Russia and Finland all want good English teachers.

Even in the USA there is a demand for English lessons, since immigrants from Spanish-speaking Latin America, let alone from the rest of the world, all need tuition in the English language.

One of the really positive aspects of being prepared to teach English as a written or spoken skill is that it is totally carbon-neutral. There is absolutely no impact on the environment in sitting down with an individual or a group of people to speak English. If the lessons involve writing, well, paper can be re-used several times or can finally be recycled, or just etch your words in the dirt or sand, or whatever natural material happens to be available that can be erased and used again and again.

So, one of the best preparations for eco-travelling is to get yourself a qualification in teaching English as a second or foreign language. You could soon find that the cost of learning pays its way in teaching.

With our current financial crises an ongoing issue there seems to be no shortage of Radiography Jobs going. This has got me thinking; is radiography in anyway bad for the environment? As much as it is a vital way of determining where foreign objects have found their way into the human body is it detrimental in any way to our planet?

It turns out that the old fashioned way of performing radiology did have bad effects due to the amount of energy it used. But also similar to the fact that digital photography is better for the planet than the traditional film photography, digital radiography also shares the same benefits. As much as using film over digital images does have a nicer feel to a photograph, and there are many purists that still won’t dare go digital, it is important we embrace these areas of the digital age in order to do our bit for the planet. It also pleases me that more and more movies are being shot on digital and as the numbers of cinemas use digital screens we are cutting emissions even further when it comes to being entertained. The production of film causes carbon emissions, as does the processing of it. It uses chemicals that get released into our atmosphere that we could do without.

We need to see more things go digital for the benefit of saving our planet. So don’t be afraid of the digital age it has its uses if we want a planet we can live on in years to come.

For those that are environment conscious, we are at least aware of various international debates and trends about the need for the world to go green. These reasons of course cannot be farfetched; we are killing our planet and we are the ones that can also restore it to better health. How green can green get or better still; how green is green? These are question that are crucial to the future of a greener earth. Hybrid cars are said to be eco-friendly but how green is the manufacturing plant where they are produced? Some cars are said to have zero emission level however the truth is that the danger posed by the carbon released during their production is dangerous.

I am not saying hybrid cars are not a welcome development. They are actually a giant leap towards a better earth. What I am calling for is better responsibility from both government and manufacturers in general. It is a call for governments and firms to double their efforts. We want to see more legislation from the part of government. Companies for example should be given minimum expectations on how to turn their manufacturing plants into green buildings. This may take the form of yearly expectations or a deadline spanning a long period say ten years. Things like this will keep all parties involved on their toes especially when they are aware of the target that is set before them. If the production process is not friendly to the environment, then green is not green in car manufacturing.

When children are in school today, not only are they learning the basics such as math, English, reading and sciences, but they are being taught ways to be kinder and gentler to our earth. With so many possible ways to help reduce your carbon footprint and become more “green"or eco-friendly it is simple, everyday changes that have a lasting impact. Recycling, driving more energy efficient vehicles, and reducing the amount of household waste are all good places to start. While these ideas are just a few of the many things that you can do, it is important to realize that you have to start somewhere.

It cannot be left up to parents alone, society as a whole has to be invested in our future. Therefore, part of the responsibility has fallen on our children’s teachers to help teach not only the basics of Math, English, Science and History, but also to school them about what mistakes society has made in how we conduct ourselves and the significant impact it has had on our environment.

The primary teaching jobs of educators has become increasingly difficult over the years with the stress of having to adhere to very strict teaching guidelines at the same time preparing our children for what is a very uncertain future. By providing the simple, yet necessary tools to help them become more conscious of how we take care of our environment, then maybe someday in the near future, recycling and environmental consciousness will be something we all do as naturally as breathing. And then, just maybe our teachers can go back to the business of educating our children.
