A different shade of green
Much has been said about going green. Matter of fact, this term has been bandied about so much that it has now become a part of everyday vocabulary. So much so that you half expect everything to have conformed to keeping the earth a safe and better place to live in. A noble cause and well worth the hullabaloo. Not like a musical event that goes around the world but skips Kingston for no reason. I was in for the shock of my life the other day when I came across an article that proclaimed that hybrid cars actually discharged more harmful substances than petrol or diesel ones. Boy, you could have knocked me over with a feather!

One unconsciously assumes that green means green. Not a variation that can be passed off as the actual one. It seldom crosses a layman’s mind to doubt the authenticity of what is proclaimed by government agencies and big companies. Imagine if this is a fact that has been hidden from mankind for some pecuniary motive. We could well do further damage mistakenly being led to believe that we are saving the earth! Question then is, how green is green?

There is no point in fooling others as those who think they are, essentially hoodwink their own loved ones too. Damage to the environment affects everybody. And it’s not an easy task undoing the damage to the environment. The best way forward is for all the nations to adapt a uniform code that does the least, if not negligible, damage to the environment after evaluating the existing ones to see if it actually serves the purpose. Until such time the humble bicycle as a means of transport continues to be a good alternative; both for the environment and our own health. There are no shades of green here.
